Child Protection Week 2024

wave

Protecting children is everyone’s business. We must do more to urgently address the number of children facing harm.

Sadly, between 45,000 to 50,000 kids in Australia experience abuse or neglect every year.

Just one child is one too many.

This Child Protection Week (1st to 7th September), Act for Kids is shining a light on child abuse and encouraging Australians to talk about the impacts of emotional abuse.

That’s why we’ve released the ‘Safe Hearts and Minds’ factsheet, full of tips to help adults build positive emotional connections with children, as well as information on how to recognise the signs of emotional abuse.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) 2024, Child protection Australia 2022–23, viewed 30 August 2024, https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/child-protection/child-protection-australia-insights

Emotional abuse was the most common type of maltreatment (57%) among the 45,424 Australian children confirmed to have experienced abuse in 2022-23.
